About the Summit

"From Landlocked Challenges to Land-linked Opportunities"

East Africa has not effectively maximized the huge market potential that exists in the region and this is as a result of the poor quality of transport infrastructure such as roads and railways and in some cases absence of network or interconnectivity.

As the region pushes for regional economic integration and moves towards establishment of common markets, it has become urgent and critical to fast track and integrate the regional and national action plans and put in place an effective and efficient roads and rail transport infrastructure that will facilitate the dismantling of trade barriers & restrictions that lead to high transport costs and remain a major obstacle to investments in the region.

It is against this background that the East Africa Road and Rail Infrastructure Summit 2011 is organized to provide another excellent platform to discuss the many challenges facing the road and rail infrastructure development in the region today, as well as deliberate on major strategic issues across the transport infrastructure chain along which road and rail co-exist.

This event which comes on the heels of the inaugural and tremendously successful Africa Roads & Rail Infrastructure Summit 2010 will provide once more an excellent platform to network, source and evaluate state-of-the-art rail and road transport infrastructure technology, as well as secure excellent partnership with providers of key services – including finance, railway design, road construction, operating expertise and technology and to address the crucial issues of infrastructure funding for optimized capacity.

The following key themes will be addressed in depth:
•      Evolving Challenges and Opportunities Towards Closing the Region's Transport Infrastructure Gap
•      Regional Co-operation as a Catalyst for Sustainable and Efficient Infrastructure Solutions
•      Infrastructure Financing and Risk Management for Road and Rail
•      Shaping Policy Formulation to Encourage Investments and PPP
•      New Technology and Innovations in the Transport (Road/Rail) Systems and Infrastructure
•      Transport Infrastructure Development and Maintenance of Existing Ones
•      Road/Rail transport Operations, Efficiency and Operational capacity
•      Climate Change and Transport Infrastructure - Ensuring Environmental Concerns are not left out
