About this summit

Please note that the MobilePlus Summit has been re-scheduled to 26-27 March 2008. The recent and upcoming market developments regarding the Ukrainian, Moldovan and Russian 3G licenses have prompted us, at the request of our telecom partners, to re-schedule the summit to a date which will give all our participants much better opportunities to benefit from this event.

In Central & Eastern Europe (CEE), competition among mobile operators is increasing, as most markets have arrived at penetration rates of over 100%. The markets are also maturing, and as third-generation mobile networks are being deployed, consumers have become more sophisticated, and want more than just voice from their mobile devices. This is the critical tipping point for operators, to position themselves as mobile service providers, to become more than just bit pipes by offering Value Added Services (VAS). Especially the mobile broadband VAS, such as video and music streaming, are positioned to become key revenue drivers in CEE, the Caucasus, Russia and Central Asia.

This New Mobile Market Place, in which the MNOs need to operate, is also becoming more crowded, and seeing them directly competing with Web 2.0 style mobile online services who are using the mobile network as a data pipe, cutting out the “middle man”. As mobile TV falters, video-streaming emerges as one of the most popular mobile applications in the mature Central & Eastern European markets, putting the popular world of video-sharing platforms to mobile end-user devices. Other mobile internet-driven applications, such as mobile social networking, mobile user-generated content (UGC), and mobile instant messaging, are enjoying growing popularity among mobile users. Operators must move quickly to take full advantage of these new 3G VAS, by making the right technological choices, and forging alliances with content providers – or risk getting left out of the value chain.

At this MobilePlus Summit, we will be examining these new revenue drivers for mobile operators, but we will also take a look at the technical foundation, such as Content Delivery Systems, Advanced Content Billing, and BSS/OSS, which are critical to the functioning of 3G VAS. We will be discussing strategies for mobile operators in such competitive market places. We will cover the opportunities offered by mobile and 3G advertising. We will be exploring Fixed-Mobile Convergence opportunities for operators in this region, and will be taking a look at the Fixed-Line Digitalization that needs to go along with it. Finally, we will also take a look at the regulatory environment for mobile communications in key countries.

To this MobilePlus Summit, we have invited top operators and key regulators from all across CEE, the Caucasus, Central Asia and Russia to discuss these key issues, and to network with fellow operators and regulators. We are also offering the opportunity to solution and content providers, to become part of this important summit and to take advantage of the sponsorship and exhibition opportunities.

This MobilePlus Summit will be held in Kyiv/Kiev, Ukraine, for the first time. Ukraine is the second-largest and one of the most competitive mobile markets in CEE, with its only UMTS license currently operated by Utel, the subsidiary of Ukrtelecom. The Ukrainian regulator is poised to issue more UMTS licenses soon, with the incumbent 2G operators well positioned to take advantage of this opportunity.
