About the Summit

Capitalising on the Potential of Mobile Money in the Region

Myanmar is at the dawn of change and standing at the tipping point of a mobile money transformation, having experienced strong economic growth in recent years. However, still less than 20% of the population are able to access banking services in a predominantly cash-based economy. 70% of the population live in rural areas with 19 million adults as farmers. Mobile phones are still a very new phenomenon.

The absence of a traditional banking infrastructure therefore makes it a prime territory for mobile money operations. Leveraging on the new telecommunications infrastructure that was recently enhanced, the time is now to seize emerging opportunities of mobile money in the country. Furthermore, 94% have no access to tap water and 31% no access to electricity. Mobile money has the potential to drive delivery of basic services and amenities. Key players such as Ooredoo, Telenor and Yoma Bank are leading the mobile money revolution in the country.

Growth of Digital Financial Services for the Unbanked

Other Asian countries undergoing digital transformation - such as Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, China and India - also create tremendous opportunities in mobile money. With the usual mobile money transfer as a starting point, the ecosystem is expecting significant and exciting developments ahead - together with the rise of social media - to eventually roll out ubiquitous mobile banking, payment transactions and commerce operations. Key players such as Google, Alipay and Facebook are continually optimizing their mobile payment platforms.

The 7th Mobile Money & E-Commerce Summit 2016 will once again be the cornerstone platform and blueprint for all stakeholders to address common issues such as the lack of HR and a skilled workforce, inadequate physical and technological infrastructure, and the need to cultivate effective agent networks along with analysing the latest technologies and regulations. The latest joint ventures and partnerships will be highlighted, case studies shared and strategies robustly debated. New trends, opportunities and technologies will be showcased, once again providing the perfect platform for extraordinary networking opportunities for all Summit participants.
